Quarry Stone Crusher Building

This section will show the build up of the stone crusher building. It's based on an article in the November 1957 issue of Model Railroader.

  | | | The article describes building both the crusher building onthe left and the bunker on the right. I am only going to use
the drawings and dimensions of the crusher building.
 |
  | | | Using ΒΌ" foam core I made a mock-up of the building to see how it would fit in the spot I wanted the crusher building to reside. |
  | | | I liked where the building was to set. The auger and holding bin will be in the position as shown. Another building will be added with a conveyor coming out that will go to the loading bins. |
  | | | With the location finalized I built, using luan plywood, the bottom half of the crusher building. The blue foam represents a cliff. This will hide the auger and holding bin. The green outline will be the beginning of the HOn3 coal mine portion of the layout. |
  | | | I noticed that the luan structure had warped after assembly. So I tried some Gator Board with good success.
 |
  | | | After much contemplation on what I wanted to use I decided upon a block wall for the crusher building. But how to makeHO scale blocks was the big question. You'll find the answer at:

  | | | The two doors and two windows were laid out and penciled in. |
  | | | The first row ready to be glued on to the base. The styrene pieceswill be used for spacers between the blocks for mortar lines.
 |
  | | | The first row glued on with the styrene spacers. The styrene is.010" thick giving a mortar line of close to an inch in HO scale.
 |
  | | | Three rows done. Many more to go. A strip of .010"styrene was used between rows to give a mortar line.
