Mantua 2-6-6-2T Engine Tune Up

Adding electrical wheel wipers and tightening up wheel sideways looseness
This project was inspired by a post on the Rail Line Forum from a member that was having
problems with his purchased 2-6-6-2T. I had originally started a post on improving the the engine on the now defunct Railroad Line Forum.

The engine straight out of the box.

Disassembled engine.

Here's one problem with the axles. Note the clearance of the rear axle as opposed to
the front axle. The front axle/wheel set is pushed all the way to the left. The read driver
axle is pushed all the way to the right. (A) Note the gap in the drive pin between bushing
and wheel (B). Note slop in linkage (C) & (D).
 |
With the wheels all pushed to the left note the poor workmanship of the linkage. Some of
the bent linkage could have been caused by previous owner during handling of engine.
 |
Here's one reason your engine could have a short going around corners.
Red circle shows rod pin hitting valve slide.
 |
Note sloppiness of linkage and bent out valve guide.
 |
Note rod pin hitting valve slide. Could cause jerky running.
 |
With axle pushed all the way to the left there is lots of
clearance but now the left side hits the valve gear.
